Todd W. Huehns

Funeral Home Owner, Funeral Director & Crematory Operator

Todd William Huehns is the fourth-generation funeral director in the Steffen and Huehns families with over thirty years of experience in serving families. His great-grandfather, William O. Steffen, established Steffen Furniture and Funeral Chapel in Shebogyan in the early 1900s. William's son, Leonard Steffen (the second generation), worked as a funeral director in Sturgeon Bay during WWII while also working in the shipyards. After graduating from Worsham Institute of Mortuary Science in Skokie, IL, (now Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Wheeling, IL), Todd worked with his father, Wayne L. Huehns (the third generation), serving families in Sheboygan County from their Huehns Funeral Home locations in Sheboygan Falls and Oostburg. 

Todd began serving the families of Northern and Southern Door County shortly after 1990 when he came to work for Davis Mortuary (now Huehns Funeral Home). Sylvester "Cy" Dernbach, the owner of Davis Mortuary at the time, had purchased the funeral business from Robert "Bob" Davis some years before. Both, Cy and Bob have passed away.

On January 1, 2001, he and his wife, Renee (Robillard) Huehns purchased the Davis Mortuary in Sturgeon Bay from Cy Dernbach, and on October 15, 2021, they purchased the Schinderle Funeral Home in Algoma from Laurie Schinderle, whom, together with her father, Bill, had cared for many of Renee's Algoma relatives.

For Todd and his family, coming to Door County was like coming home in a sense with all of the family his wife, Renee Robillard Huehns, has throughout Southern Door County and Kewaunee County. While living in Sturgeon Bay, Todd has been an active member and supporter of the surrounding Door County communities. He is a member and past president of the Sturgeon Bay Optimist Club and has served as past president of the Sturgeon Bay Breakfast Rotary Club. Todd is currently a member of the Sturgeon Bay Noon Rotary Club. He coached local youth sports for many years  in Sturgeon Bay and Sevastopol areas. Todd enjoys reading and learning about  history in general, the history of Door County and has been a member of the Door County Historical Society.  

Aside from spending time with family, he enjoys hunting with family and friends, golfing, boating, traveling with his wife, Renee, motorcycling on his Harley, and following his favorite sports teams, but most of all being grandpa to William, Kinley, and Nora.

Renee (Robillard) Huehns

Co-Owner & Graphics Manager

Renee is a granddaughter of Lawrence and Josephine "Josie" (LeFevre) Harmann and a daughter of the late Darlene (Harmann) Robillard and was born in Cudahy, WI, the daughter of Kenneth and Darlene (Harmann) Robillard. She grew up in Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School. Renee went on to study at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she met Todd Huehns, her husband-to-be. They were united in marriage on October 18, 1986 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheboygan Falls (where Todd was from).

They welcomed their first son, Erik, in 1988, and then Brock in 1990. She and Todd lived in Oostburg, WI where Todd and his father, Wayne, had their second funeral home, until 1992. (Their other funeral home was located in Sheboygan Falls.) While living in Sheboygan County, Renee and Todd enjoyed singing together for weekend church services and also for weddings.

In the fall of 1992, she and "the boys" moved to Door County when Todd accepted a position as a funeral director with Davis Mortuary under the ownership of Sylvester "Cy" Dernbach. For Renee, the move to Door County was like coming home in a sense with Renee's (Robillard) relatives initially settling in Gardner in Southern Door County (as they were original from Canada) and moving into Kewaunee where her father, Ken, grew up. Her mother, Darlene, was the daughter of Lawrence and Josephine "Josie" (LeFevre) Harmann, and the only sister of Cliff and Wayne Harmann.

In November of 1992, Renee and Todd, welcomed their third son, Christian. Initially, she took care of the boys at home until they were of school age. Renee then taught Kindercamp at the Door County YMCA in Sturgeon Bay for a couple years. She started helping more around the funeral home as the years went by, and then was full-time when Todd and her purchased Davis Mortuary on January 1, 2001. On October 15, 2021, she and her husband, Todd, purchased the Schinderle Funeral Home.

At the funeral home Renee has taken pride in overseeing all of the graphic coordination including, creating memorial folders and prayer cards, register books, and memorial tribute DVDs. She always been someone community members can talk to before, during, and after services. Renee has always been there to help Todd and now her sons, Erik and Brock (who are also funeral directors), with anything and everything that needs to be done. She loves being there to support her friends and neighbors and other community members through a difficult time during the loss of a loved one.

Renee has helped at Vacation Bible School for local churches and has been a member of Business Women and the Red Hat Society (also known as the "Red Hatters") as a Pink Hatter. She and Erik are also members of the Peninsula Belgian American Club, which meets at the old schoolhouse in Namur in Southern Door.

Laurie Schinderle

Funeral Director

Laurie is a daughter of Bill and Jan Schinderle and graduate of a Algoma High School.

Laurie graduated from Milwaukee Area Technical College with a degree in funeral service in 1982 and served Algoma area families alongside her father, Bill, and continued ownership and operation of the funeral home from her father in 1992 until selling the funeral home Todd & Renee (Robillard) Huehns in October of 2021. She continues to be there for her community in all aspects of service that the funeral home provides.

Professionally, she is a member of National Funeral Directors Association, the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association, which she has served as Past President of the Fox River Valley Funeral Directors Association, has been a member of the International Cemetery, Cremation, and Funeral Association, and the Funeral Service & Cremation Alliance of Wisconsin.

In the community, Laurie has been an active member of the Algoma Lions Club (which she has served as five-year Past President), the Algoma Optimist Club, Algoma Chamber of Commerce, and served as a volunteer for many other community services.

Erik R. Huehns

Funeral Director & Crematory Operator

Erik Ryan Huehns is a great-grandson of Lawrence and Josephine "Josie" (LeFevre) Harmann grew up in Sturgeon Bay and graduated as co-valedictorian of the Sturgeon Bay High School class of 2006. He then went on to study pre-medical sciences at St. Norbert College in De Pere, before deciding to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and two generations before. Erik graduated from St. Norbert College in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics.

He studied funeral service at Milwaukee Area Technical College in West Allis, Wisconsin's only school for funeral service, graduating as valedictorian for the class of 2012. During school, he served as president of Sigma Phi Sigma, the national honorary funeral service fraternity, and earned the Harry B. Goodman Valedictorian Award, the William F. Krause Leadership in Funeral Service Award, and the Legacy Award for being at least a third-generation family member to serve families as a funeral director. Erik became the fifth generation of the Steffen and Huehns families funeral directors when he received his license as a funeral director in January 2013. He became a certified crematory operator through the National Funeral Directors Association in 2018. Erik joined the Schinderle Funeral Home staff in October of 2021 and is blessed to able to care for his Algoma relatives and community members.

In 2012, Erik was united in marriage to Kathryn "Katie" Jean Bobinski, his best friend from college. Katie is an elementary school teacher at Sevastopol Elementary School. At church, has been an active member of the identity committee and the welcoming committee, the church choir (with his wife, Katie), is currently on the educational endowment committee, and serves as lector. He is also an active member of the Forestville-Maplewood Lions Club, where he currently serves on the board of directors, the same Lions club Erik's great-great uncle, Norman LeFevre, was a charter member of. With his (Belgian) family ties to Southern Door and Kewaunee counties, Erik is also a member of the Peninsula Belgian American Club, which meets every month at the old schoolhouse in Namur (in Southern Door County) next to the former St. Mary of the Snows Catholic Church (now the Belgian Heritage Center). Erik has been active with and a former board member of both, the Namur Belgian Heritage Foundation and the United Way in Door County.

In May of 2014, Erik and Katie's son, William Henry, was born, in May of 2016, Erik and Katie welcomed their daughter, Kinley Grace, into the world, and in April of 2019, their daughter, Nora Kathryn, was born.

Brock Huehns

Funeral Director & Certified Crematory Operator

Brock Huehns is a great-grandson of Lawrence and Josephine "Josie" (LeFevre) Harmann and grew up in Sturgeon Bay and graduated with the Sturgeon Bay High School Class of 2008. He went on to study and earn his bachelor’s degree in human biology from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Brock studied funeral service at Milwaukee Area Technical Area Technical College in West Allis and graduated in May of 2015. He served as President for his class and of their honorary funeral service fraternity, Sigma Phi Sigma. While in the funeral service program at MATC, Brock received the (1st place) Edward Heidenreich Award for his restorative art abilities. 

He began serving his funeral director apprenticeship in Green Bay while completing his undergraduate studies at UWGB and finished his apprenticeship back home in Sturgeon Bay upon his graduation from mortuary school. Brock became the second fifth-generation funeral director in his family when he received his funeral director license in January of 2017. 

He joined the Schinderle Funeral Home staff in October of 2021.

Outside of funeral service, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping. Brock has been active with Rotary Youth Interact and helping with church youth nights over the years. He is a member of the Sturgeon Bay Lions Club. Brock lives in Sturgeon Bay with his wife, Amanda, and their French bulldog, Winston.

Amanda (McDaniel) Huehns

Funeral Director, Certified Crematory Operator, & Licensed Agent for Burial Agreements

Amanda (McDaniel) Huehns grew up in Iron Mountain, Michigan, and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 2013. She then went on to study mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County in Wausau, Wisconsin. While attending, Amanda was a Phi Theta Kappa member and was inducted into Beta Rho Zeta before graduating in May of 2015.

Amanda studied mortuary science at Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Wheeling, Illinois. While in school, she became a member of Pi Sigma Eta, the National Morticians Fraternity.

Amanda served her funeral director apprenticeship at a funeral home on the east side of Green Bay, and in January of 2017, she earned her funeral director license and went to work for a funeral home on the west side of Green Bay. She joined the Huehns Funeral Home, Inc. & Door County Crematory LLC staffs in July of 2018. Amanda is a licensed director in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. She is also a certified crematory operator through the Cremation Association of North America and an Agent for Burial Agreements.

Amanda resides on the west side of Sturgeon Bay with her husband, Brock Huehns and their loving Frenchie, Winston. In her spare time, Amanda enjoys running, playing tennis, reading, spending time with her family, and enjoying the outdoors. She is an avid Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Cubs fan.

Jodie (Geisel) Schartner

Office Manager & Funeral Home Support Staff

Jodie (Geisel) Schartner is a daughter of Bernard and Shirley Geisel and a sister of Jamie (Mike) Henschel, Heidi Geisel, Wade Geisel, and Tara (Aaron) LeClair. She grew up on the family homestead in the Town of Sevastopol and graduated from Sevastopol High School and UW-Stevens Point. Jodie married Jesse Schartner, and they have two children - a son, Riley, and a daughter, Emilie.

She joined the Huehns Funeral Home family and staff in April of 2018 and became a part of the Schinderle Funeral Home staff in October of 2021. Jodie had previously been employed with Baylake Bank (now Nicolet Bank) in Sturgeon Bay. She helps to coordinate all of the administrative efforts at the funeral home and also helps on visitations and services.

Jodie has been a wonderful addition to our staff.

Gary A. Scharrig

Apprentice Funeral Director & Licensed Agent for Burial Agreements

Gary Scharrig is a resident of Jacksonport and a son of Alvin and Diane (Dietrich) Scharring. He graduated from Sevastopol High School in 1988. Gary has worked at Greenwood Supper Club in Fish Creek. He currently serves as a pastor with Immanuel Lutheran Church in Baileys Harbor and currently manages the Homestead Suites in Fish Creek. He has been a part of the funeral home staff-helping since around the time when Todd and Renee initially bought the funeral home.

As an apprentice funeral director, Gary assists in transferring those who've passed away, back into our care at the funeral home, helping on visitations and funerals, in addition to other care efforts. As a licensed agent for burial agreements, he is able to help families pre-plan and pre-fund for their final care and desired funeral services. Those who know Gary, know what a caring heart he has and that he's always there to help.

William

Past Owner & Funeral Director - Deceased

William "Bill" J. Schinderle, 90, Algoma, died Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at home with his children by his side after a long battle with leukemia and congestive heart failure. He was born January 15, 1930 in Mayville, WI, to Frank and Carmella (Corollo) Schinderle.

Bill graduated from the Mayville High School and attended two years at St. Norbert's College before going to Mortuary school in Milwaukee. He got his bachelor of science degree and became a funeral director in 1953. Our dad met his future wife, Jan, while taking classes for mortuary school. He married Jan Neuendorf October 3, 1953 in Milwaukee.

They moved to Stockbridge, WI in 1953 where dad owned and operated a funeral home, furniture store, LP gas service, ambulance service and the Lakeview Motel until 1967.

He served as a volunteer firefighter and was the acting chief for a number of years and was a member St. Mary's Catholic Church in Stockbridge.
In 1967 he bought the Haucke Funeral Home here in Algoma and ran it until his daughter, Laurie, took over in 1992. Dad was still very active in the funeral home until 2016.

He was very active in the Algoma community including; a charter member and past president of the Algoma Optimist Club, past president of the Algoma Lions Club, former Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus and financial secretary, past president of the Algoma Library Board, a member of St. Mary Catholic Church including ushering, serving communion, member of the finance committee and past president of the parish council. He was also a member of the National Guard for eight years. He was past president of the Fox River Valley Funeral Directors Association. He served on the Board of Directors for the Community State Bank in Algoma for 25 plus years. He was a Licensed Funeral Director for 62 years.

Bill and Mahlon Dier built the first handicapped building in Algoma which is now the Violence Intervention House.
Bill and Jan enjoyed traveling around the world including; the Holy Lands, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Ireland and Europe. For many years they would winter in Florida and Texas.

He also attended all of the sporting events that his four children were involved in.
Bill is survived by his four children, Steve (Nancy), Denis (Barb), Laurie and Midge (Mike) Swedberg, three grandchildren Sara, Scott (Alex) and Sam (Taylor); two great grandsons Alex and Will along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Jan, infant daughter Julia, two brothers and sisters-in-law Bob (Beth) and Jim (Marilyn) and one sister and brother-in-law Rosemary (Mike) Hartl.

A public viewing was held Saturday, May 23, 2020 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM with a service at 4:00 PM with Rev. Alvan Amadi officiating. Burial followed at St. Mary Cemetery.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy memorials may be made out to the Algoma Long Term Care or Unity Hospice in Bill's memory.
