Laura Matzke Obituary

Laura L. Matzke, 93, Sturgeon Bay, formerly of Kolberg, passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at the Door County Medical Center.  She was born September 29, 1929, in Algoma to John and Ora (Severin) Nessinger.
As a young woman, Laura was employed at various places and told stories of her time at Mirro where she worked hard and spent time with her co-workers.  Laura married Marvin Matzke on July 23, 1955, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Algoma. The couple worked together as farmers on the Matzke home farm for many years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2005.
Laura had many interests; she loved to bake, create new crafts, garden, sew and play cards. Laura also enjoyed staying in contact with family and friends and many remember her hand-written Christmas letters and cards.  Laura always kept the family cake pan filled with homemade desserts and taught her children to bake traditional recipes.   Laura brought a spark of energy to her home as a city girl who became a dairy farmer. She taught Marvin how to dance and often was the motivator for social activities in her family.  She had a distinctive giggle and could find the positive side to most things. Laura was a lifelong member of her church’s Ladies Aid.  In later years, Laura moved into an assisted living facility in Sturgeon Bay, where she often said that she felt like a queen with everyone taking care of her.  During the past two years, she resided at the Door County Skilled Nursing Facility where she enjoyed playing cards with Dawn, Pat, Arlene, and Jan. She also spent numerous hours making mischief with her close friend Arlene Fisher and working on puzzles as a team.
Laura is survived by her four children, June Matzke (Larry Johnson), Luxemburg; Neal (Roberta) Matzke, Forestville; Fern (Tim) Blasier, Green Bay and Amie (Gregg) Pittman, Oregon, WI; very special granddaughter Jordan Blasier; three step-grandchildren Crystal (Jeffrey) LaLuzerne, Angela (Ryan) Kezo, and Bruce Schmidt (significant other Crystal Holden); 12 step-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Betty Lou Nessinger, Algoma; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, infant son John, her parents,
ten siblings; Caroline Diedrich, John Nessinger, Raymond Nessinger, Phillip Nessinger, Ralph Nessinger, Melvin Nessinger, Chester (Joe) Nessinger, Joyce Arbeiter, Kathryn Zastrow, and Mary Jane Young, many brother and sisters-in-law, as well as nieces and nephews.
There will be a public visitation on Saturday, October 29th, 2022, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Kolberg from 9:00 AM until the time of services at 12:00 PM with Rev. Curt Grube officiating. Burial in the church cemetery with lunch to follow.
The Schinderle Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements for Laura and her family.  Laura’s family would like to thank all of the staff at the Door County Skilled Nursing Facility and the Door County Medical Center for their unending support and care.
