William Leslie Clark

William Leslie Clark, of Algoma, Wisconsin passed on to eternal life on January 5th, 2015 atUnity Hospice in De Pere. He was 76.He was born in rural Dunn County, Wisconsin on July 14th, 1938 to William LeRoy and AliceC. (Johnson) Clark. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Boyceville, where William attendedpublic school. He graduated from Boyceville High School in 1956, and then enrolled atUniversity of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he earned a BS degree (English and Social Studies)in 1960. He subsequently earned a MS degree from the same institution in 1967.William held teaching positions at public schools in Prairie Farm, Racine, and Black RiverFalls, as well as at Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam. From 1969 until his retirement in 1995,he taught English Literature at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the last 10 years ofwhich he served as Full Professor. In 1974 he received a Fulbright Scholarship to readTheology at St. Peter's College, Oxford, England.Following his retirement, William moved to Algoma, where he was involved in variousorganizations, including the Algoma Writers' Group and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Hewas a devoted churchman, and served as lay preacher, acolyte, and vestryman at St. AgnesEpiscopal Church. His memberships included the Oxonian Society, the Chicago Caxton Club,and the Society of Charles King and Martyr. He was an avid collector of art, antiques, andbooks, as well as a world traveler.He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his siblings Eunice Clark-Rogers, andBeatrice and Wesley Clark. He is survived by one nephew, Graydon Rogers (Pamela Currier),of Chandler, AZ; several cousins; and Kenneth Plasky (Tina Campbell), of Marshall, WI andhis sons Marek and Isaac.William's insight, talent, wit, and generosity touched the lives of all whom he knew. Gratitudeis expressed to all those who remembered him during his illness, especially for those who keptcountless hours by his side. Thank you also to the staff at Unity Hospice for their beautiful,peaceful facility and excellent, compassionate care.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 2nd, 2015 at St. Agnes-by-the-LakeEpiscopal Church in Algoma. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service at 2:00 pm.Refreshments will follow.
