Thomas "Tom" Stangel Obituary

Thomas “Tom” Stangel, 78, Algoma, died Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Bellin Hospital.

He was born on September 1, 1945, to Joseph and Helen (Hafeman) Stangel.  On October 31, 1964, he married Mary Haack at St. Mary Church in Algoma.  After graduation from Algoma High School, he was a machinist at Kewaunee Engineering and celebrated 45 years with the company before retiring.

Tom’s hobbies included gardening, cussing while maintaining the pool, being part of the steam engine crew with Jeff, Jim and Foof, being part of the Algoma football “chain gang”, and tinkering on cars, bikes and equipment with his friends Porkie, Doug, and brother-in-law Ken. He enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren and great grands’ activities, especially pool fun in the summer, and celebrating their momentous occasions.

Tom is survived by his three children:  Jim and Jamie, Algoma, Joseph (Schmoe) and Tina, Green Bay, Jenny and Phil, Algoma.  Ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren:  Ashley, Marcus, Emily and Elizabeth; Cara (Ben), Casey (Emily), Jessie, Eric, J.J. and Emeline; Cayla (Leah), Cassie (Ryan), Matt, Courtney, and Hadley; Andy, Cassie and Braxten; Zach, and Breanne; and daughter-in-law Jeanne.  He is further survived by one sister Mary Jane Spink, two brothers-in-law: Ken (Shirley) Haack, John (Gail) Haack, two sisters-in-law: Barb Haack, and Nancy (Dave) Kuchinski, and many nieces and nephews.  A very special thank you to Steve and Ann Lautenbach for their years of friendship and attentiveness to him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents, Joseph and Helen, and his father- and mother-in law, Art and Myrtle Haack.

Gathering of family and friends will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2024, with a prayer service/devotion at 7:00 p.m. at the Schinderle Funeral Home (1600 Schinderle Lane, Algoma).  A private burial will be held on Saturday, June 15 at the Evergreen Cemetery, Algoma.
