Susan Chaney Obituary

Susan Marie Chaney passed away on Tuesday, March 5th, 2024, in Manitowoc, WI, surrounded by the love of her family, after an eight-month battle with Cholangiocarcinoma. Sue was born on May 8th, 1956, to the late John (Jack) and Violet Chaney of Whitehall, MI. She called many places home throughout her life including Whitehall and New Era, Michigan and Algoma, Fall Creek, Bonduel, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. She took pride in creating a warm and welcoming home and made deep and lasting friendships wherever she was living. Her friends and family will always remember her quirky sense of humor, her willingness to lend a helping hand, and her dedicated loyalty.

On May 8th, 1987, she married the love of her life, Todd W. Chaney. Together they raised four children, Kate (Jesse) Gillett, Meagan Christel (Austin Ritter), Johanna Chaney, and David Chaney and have four grandchildren: Lillian, Violet, Abram, and Xander. Sue was a proud grandparent, always making an effort to attend school activities and sporting events.

Sue was both a teacher and a lifelong learner. Achieving a Master of Education from Viterbo University was a proud moment for her. She taught multiple grades in multiple districts over the years. After retirement, she continued her love of learning, working part time in her local public library. She carried her love of education throughout her life - sharing her hobbies and passions with friends and family. She inspired many into picking up a book, bird watching, card making, and playing Scrabble or Wordle. Her children also remember and delight in taking many “field trip” vacations.

Sue was active in many churches throughout her life but more than this, she demonstrated her faith by showing endless grace, love, understanding and forgiveness. She adopted an attitude of finding the best in everyone while encouraging others to let their light shine. She took great comfort in her personal relationship with God throughout the years, and especially during the last few months of her life.

Sue is survived by her husband, Todd, children, and grandchildren, her brother, Dave (Pam) Chaney, and sister, Anne (Bill) Gagnon. She also leaves behind more-family-than-friends, Doris and Ronald Fekken. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister and brother-in-law Bonnie (John) Carter and her beloved Golden Retriever, Bear.

Special thanks for the wonderful support and care received from St. Vincent’s Hospital Cancer Center and Sharon S. Richardson Hospice.

The family extends an invitation to celebrate Sue’s life.
