Mary D. Mayheu, 71, of Algoma, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Green Bay's first New Years baby of 1943, Mary was the daughter of Merville and Bergitta L'Empereur. Attending schools at St. Patrick's and St. Joseph Academy, she graduated from St. Norbert College in 1965 with a degree in elementary education. November 27, 1965, Mary married Stephen Mayheu, her love and partner for life. Viet Nam interrupted their first year together followed by residence in Colorado Springs, CO, then Park Forest, IL, before settling in Algoma in 1972, raising their two sons and supporting a head football coach's schedule. Mary became the children's librarian at the Algoma Public Library for six years where her summer reading programs revealed her passion for reading and invigorating young minds, opening them to the world of literature. In 1986, she joined the faculty at St. Mary School where she continued her love of reading and writing, encouraging junior high students to enjoy and learn the skills of language arts. Mary took over as principal of St. Mary in 1992. While still keeping her hand in the classroom, she actively pursued improvements for the technological facilities of the school, establishing the first computer lab in the school district of Algoma. After 19 years as principal and teacher, she retired in 2001, garnering the Chamber of Commerce Business, Education & Industry Award for Teacher of the Year. She was temporarily brought out of retirement by Bishop Morneau to be acting principal at Resurrection school in Green Bay.Retirement found Mary even busier. Keeping the tradition of attending Packer games with her father in City Stadium, she also found time to work for eight years as a tour guide at Lambeau Field for her beloved Green Bay Packers. She & Stephen spent a year on their sailboat doing America's Great Loop, the circumnavigation of connected waterways around the eastern half of the United States and Canada. Mary loved to travel and meet people. Her adventures continued with a biking trip to Spain and other European countries, including canal boats in France, Ireland, & Scotland, and excursions to Germany & Japan to visit grandchildren. Her final trip was the journey last fall on her boat, Liberty Blue, from Wisconsin to Florida via the East Coast. Mary is survived by her husband of 48 years, Stephen, as well as two sons, Eric and Paul. Eric and his wife, Heather, have two sons, Conner and Collin; Paul and his wife, Jennifer, have one son, Calvin.
