Leora Detjen

Leora L. Detjen, 97, Algoma, died Monday, November 28, 2011 at Bellin Hospital after a short stay there. She was born November 12, 1914 to Walter and Lydia (Mueller) Scherer in Manitowoc. Her family moved to the Algoma area and she attended the Victory Grade School in Forestville and graduated from the Algoma High School. Leora married Lorenz Detjen in Algoma on June 20, 1934 and he preceded her in death in 1958. Leora worked at the Algoma Net Company for a short time, then was a cook at St. Paul's Lutheran School for eight years. Then she worked at Anderson Appliance in Algoma for two years, then she worked for Dr. Arthur Gorz for 17 years and after that she worked part time at Scenic Shore Hotel cleaning rooms for three years. Leora was a current member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and a former member of St. Paul's Ladies Aid. Leora cherished the time spent with her children grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends, reading, crocheting, knitting, gardening, walking and her special Bible Study Class. Leora is survived by her two daughters Marjorie (John) Mehlin, Leawood, KS; and Lorna (Daniel) Ropson, Luxemburg, WI; four grandchildren, Lori (Clint) McWhorter, Overland Park, KS; Jeffrey (Jana) Mehlin, Overland Park, KS; Tammy (Jon) Bryfczinski, Green Bay; and Rick (Tracie) Ropson, Luxemburg; 11 great grandchildren, Ashton & Noah McWhorter; Lindsey, Nicholas and Jackson Mehlin; Michael, Ryan, Connor and Evan Bryfczinski; Emily and Ethan Ropson, one niece Judy (Mark) Steiner, Luxemburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lorenz, one brother and sister-in-law Ralph (Roseabell) Scherer and nephew Steven Scherer. Family and friends may call at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 406 4th Street, Algoma, from 9 a.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2011 until time of services at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. John Moll Officiating. Burial in the Evergreen Cemetery.
