Kenneth Merlyn Iwen, 81, Algoma, passed away Thurs. April 28, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Dec. 14, 1934 in Algoma to Emil and Elsie (Makovec) Iwen. Ken graduated from the Algoma High School. Ken married Darlyne Schmidt Nov. 17, 1953 and she preceded him in death in 1993. Ken worked for the Algoma Record Herald, Katch's Dept. Store, Kewaunee Engineering and the US Plywood before entering the US Navy in the Great Lakes and served in active duty as a hospital corpman from 1956 and 1957, then was in the active reserve for four more years. After his discharge from the active reserved they lived in Watertown and worked at a gas station in lake Geneva. He was promoted to manager and ran a gas station in Watertown. He bought the business in 1966 and two years later he sold it. The couple moved to McFarland where he was appointed Police Chief and served for 15 years. In 1985 Ken retired and opened a sporting goods store which he operated for two years. He was then hired by the US Postal service as a relief carrier. In 1987 Ken moved back to Algoma and bought his mother's house. He was employed by the Kewaunee Nuclear Plant and Point Beach Plant during the refueling. He did this for 10 years. Ken married Yvonne Miller in 1994.Ken was very active in organizations including; McFarland and Algoma Lions Clubs, McFarland Village Board, President of the Black Ash Gun Club, Optimist Clubs in Madison and Algoma, President of the Dane County Police Department and was appointed to the Algoma City Council. Ken was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Algoma.Ken is survived by his four daughters from his first wife; Vickie DeMille, Kewaunee; Susan (David) Flickinger, CO; Lois (Matt) Larson, McFarland; Bonnie (Rusty) Bruns, McFarland; one son Larry Kenneth Iwen and Thom; MN; two brothers Keith (Mary), Milwaukee; Frank Iwen, Madison; family from his second marriage Brian (Lisa) Miller, CA; Steven (Chris) Miller, IL; and Kevin (Shelly) Miller, Appleton; 38 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren. Ken is further preceded in death by parents, one son Ricky, in-laws Erich (Verna) Schmidt, brother-in-law Donald Miller, son-in-law Don DeMille, sister-in-law Marg Iwen, one niece Paula Landers and nephew Robert Iwen.Family and friends may gather at the SCHINDERLE FUNERAL HOME, Algoma on Wed. May 4, 2016 from 4 PM - 8 PM. then after 10 AM, Thurs. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Algoma, until the services at 11 AM with Rev. Tom Moldenhauer officiating.Prayer service 7 PM Wed. at the funeral home with Rev.
