John Wilterding Jr. Obituary

John H. Wilterding Jr., 83, Algoma, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Unity Hospice in DePere, WI with his family by his side. He was born October 21, 1930 in Neenah to John H. and Florence (Colburn) Wilterding. John entered the US Navy in 1951 during the Korean War and was a corpsman in Subic Bay, Phillipines. He was discharged in 1954. John returned to Wisconsin where he graduated from the UW Madison School of Pharmacy in June, 1958. Following his graduation, John worked as a pharmacist in Neenah and Menasha from 1958 to 1965. He married Treiva M. Anderson on October 24, 1959. She is the daughter of the late Milton T.(Mickey) and Muriel (Johnson) Anderson of Sturgeon Bay, WI. In March 1965, the family moved to Algoma where John purchased Nesemann Pharmacy. Although he offically retired from Nesemann Pharmacy in 1993, he continued to be a relief pharmacist until December 2009. John also established the Algoma Memorial Hospital Pharmacy in 1967. John's passion was Maritime history (especially Great Lakes), World War II, pocket watches and mid-west railroads. John was a member and contributor to many publications of various maritime, watch and clock collectors and railroad societies and associations. He donated 69 volumes of his research on Great Lakes ships and shipping from 1900 to the present to the Wisconsin Maritime Historical Society, Marine Room, at the Milwaukee Public Library. He also wrote and published McDougal's Dream; The American Whaleback in 1969. John was also a member of the Algoma United Methodist Church and the Sons of Norway. John is survived by his wife Treiva, one son John III, Ph.D. (Sarah); one daughter Anne Inga ( Rev. Frank) Kauzlarich; one grandson Mark John Kauzlarich; two sisters Nancy (Robert) Davis and Gretchen (John) Maring; and one brother Mark (Sue) Wilterding; many nieces and nephews. Family and friends may call at the SCHINDERLE FUNERAL HOME, Algoma from 6 PM - 8 PM, Monday, November 25, 2013 and after 10 AM Tuesday at the Algoma United Methodist Church until time of services at 11 AM with Rev. Annie Tricker and Rev. Frank Kauzlarich officiating. Burial in the Bayside Cemetery, Sturgeon Bay with full military honors. Memorials may be given to: Algoma United Methodist Church or Door County Maritime Museum The family would also like to thank Dr. Richard Hogan for his compassionate care and support of John over the past years.
