James Joseph Meyers, 88, Algoma, passed away April 24, 2025, at home surrounded by loved ones. He was born August 19, 1936, in Algoma to the late Leon and Ellen (Madden) Meyers.
In partnership with his brother, Tom, they owned and operated Algoma Oil Company (Meyers' Deep Rock) for over 20 years.
In 1957, James married Gail Gotstein. She preceded him in death. In 1976, James was united in marriage to Gloria Coenen Kuss.
James entered the military services in 1959 serving with the US Army stateside and Korea. He was Honorably discharged in 1962. One of James' highlights was being able to attend the Old Glory Honor Flight in 2018.
James enjoyed racing cars and restored many old cars during his retirement. He was a member of several automobile clubs and enjoyed many regional and national tours. Also, he and Gloria enjoyed many winters in their Florida home.
James is survived by his wife, Gloria, his four children, Craig (Audra), Julie Vetter (Cory), Timothy (Shelly), and Wendy VanDenPlas; four stepchildren, Steven Kuss (Sally), David Kuss (Joan), Kenneth Kuss (Toni) and Susan Iwen (Loren); 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, sister Carol Arndt (Ken); many nieces and nephews.
He was further preceded in death by his parents, brother Tom Meyers and sister-in-law Judy.
Visitation for James will be Tuesday, April 29, 2025, from 9:00 AM until 10:45 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, Algoma. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 AM with Father Tony Birdsall officiating. Burial to follow at the church cemetery with Full Military Rites.
The family wants to give a special thank you to Bellin Hospital, Bellin Health, VA and Unity Hospice for all the care and kindness given to James during his illness.
