Iris Johnston Obituary

Iris Mae (Toebe) Johnston, 84, Kewaunee, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at the Kewaunee Care Center. She was born Sept. 10, 1927 in Rio Creek to Clarence and Anna (Bank) Toebe. Iris attended the Rio Creek Grade School and one year at St. Paul's Grade School after her family moved to Algoma. Iris attended the Algoma High School for two years. Iris lived the majority of her adult life in Algoma and was blessed with so many friends who were present during her many adventures in life. And for over thirty years she shared her life with her beloved Hollis 'Doc' Ronsman. In the later years of her life, she then chose to move to the Kewaunee Care Center. During her younger years, Iris was an accomplished knitter; creating sweaters, hats, gloves, and many pieces of clothing to keep people warn during the cold Wisconsin winters. And in the summer she continued to stay busy by working the gardens at the family farm. Ashe aged, she never lost her passion for any animal that came into her life or her passion for sports. The Packers, Brewers, Algoma Wolves, and Wisconsin Badgers were always a topic of conversation. And she was an expert on all of 'her' teams. On Oct. 18, 1952 Iris married Herbert Johnston at St. John's Lutheran Church in Rankin. One year after their marriage the couple had a daughter and named her Joyce. Iris worked at part time cleaning at the Roustable tavern and the hotel. She also helped out tending bar there when she was needed. Iris is survived by her daughter Joyce (Bob) Van Oss, nephew James (Mary Ann) LaFond, niece Jeanne (Alan) Spanks, great nephew Marty (Sherry) LaFond, great niece Jamie (Sean) Nagel, one great-great-nephew Ryan Eggert, her cousin Dottie (Randy) Wautlet, and other cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law Mildred 'Tootie' (Clarence) 'Isaac' LaFond and a great nephew Sean Spanks. Family and friends may call at the SCHINDERLE FUNERAL HOME, Algoma, from 11 am, Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 until the time of services at 1 p.m. with Rev. John Neugebauer officiating.
