Gertrude "Trudy" M. Heuer

Gertrude (Trudy) Mayme Heuer died Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Aurora Hospital in Green Bay. She was born May 9, 1916 in Ahnapee Township to Henry Johann Zimmermann and Emma Wilhelmine Beard. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Algoma. Gertrude attended Irving Demonstration School and graduated from Algoma High School in 1933.On April 15, 1934 she married Orland Fred Heuer. Seven children, Martin, David, Diane, Wayne, Suzanne, Sheila and Ronald, were born to this union. With her husband and children, Gertrude farmed a large dairy and poultry farm north of Algoma on County Road S.After completing a library course at University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, Gertrude took a position as administrator of the Algoma Public Library. She held that position for about 2 years, before she moved to Green Bay and was named Supervisor of the Extension Department, which included 2 bookmobiles, audiovisual department, county libraries and the county school collections. She later was named head of the Audio Visual Department and then was transferred to the Art and Literature Department, as a reference Librarian. She retired from that position in May 1981.While living in Green Bay, Gertrude had been active in the Green Bay Chapter of the Sweet Adelines, Inc., an organization for women who sing barbershop harmony. She organized a quartet, the Melodears, with Collette Bohman, Enid Schabow and Lucille Graf in the early 1960s.In March 1982, Gertrude moved from Green Bay to Orlando, Florida where she purchased a home. She began working for her son, Ronald who at that time was the Executive Vice President of Funway Holidays FunJet in Orlando. She held that position until 1989. She also joined the Sweet Adeline group in Altamonte, called the "Sound of Sunshine," who later went on to win a National competition.When she retired for the second time, she developed a strong interest in genealogy and worked as a volunteer librarian at the LDS Family History Center in Winter Park, Florida. She facilitated her daughter Diane and son Martin with the genealogical research on the Johann Friedrich Heuer family and was one of the authors of the "Pioneers of Ahnapee." With her daughter Diane, she subsequently co-authored the "Family of Johann Heinrich Buehrt and Hanna Sophia Tessnow," a history of her maternal grandparents before they completed another two genealogical family history books; one on the Friedrich Wilhelm Pawlitzki family and another on the family history of the Caspar Zimmermann family - both her paternal grandparents. She contributed vast amounts of historical information for her family websites, designed and maintained by her youngest son Ronald. Trudy was an extremely good researcher and had a passion for digging through old records to find ancestors.While she lived in Orlando, she was an active member of All Saints Lutheran Church in South Orlando and later, when she moved to Huntsville, Alabama, she became a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Madison, Alabama. In March 2011, she moved from Huntsville, Alabama to Paradise Estates in Kewaunee, Wisconsin where she became a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church.Gertrude was survived by six children, Martin Heuer, Seminole, Florida; Diane Piette and husband, Stephen Hermann, Scottsdale, Arizona; Wayne (Eileen) Heuer, Kewaunee, Wisconsin; Suzanne Vlach, Hortonville, Wisconsin; Sheila Green, Laguna Beach, California; and Ronald Heuer and wife Gina Gualtieri, Kewaunee, Wisconsin. She was also survived by 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Margaret Kramer, Maplewood, Wisconsin and Eileen Slaby, Algoma, Wisconsin.Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Reinhold (Reiny) Zimmerman and Russell Zimmerman; son David Heuer; daughter-in-law Rita (Prokash) Heuer, and grandsons Steven Heuer and Bryan S. Heuer.Family and friends may call at the SCHINDERLE FUNERAL HOME, Algoma from 10 a.m., Tuesday Sept. 16, 2014 until the time of the Memorial Service at 12 p.m. Burial to follow at the Evergreen Cemetery, Algoma.
