Frank E. Schmidt, 90, Algoma, passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016 in Kewaunee. He was born Sept. 14, 1926 to Joseph and Margaret (Koskubar) Schmidt.Frank enlisted in the US Navy after graduating from Algoma High School in 1944. He served in the Pacific until 1947. He was an Atomic Veteran, having been in Nagasake and Hiroshima after the atomic bombs were dropped, and later volunteered for Operation Crossroads (Bikini bomb tests). After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he joined his father commercial fishing on his father's fishing tug, the Margret. When commercial fishing declined, he worked for Palmer Johnson Yachts and later started Algoma Marine with Jag Haegele. In 1969 he was hired boat captain of the Barney Devin for the DNR fisheries. He retired from the DNR in 1986.Frank married Alice Schmidt in 1951 and was blessed with a son Stephen and a daughter Laurel. Frank was an avid hunter and fisherman, from an early age and also was well know for his knowledge of gardening, had an orchard bearing many kinds of fruit, grafted trees, and grew Hoopsie Blue Spruce trees and pine trees from seeds. Many of which now grace the yards of his relatives, friends and neighbors. While recuperating from two broken arms in 1976, he planned building a greenhouse, a project that got underway just as soon as he could use his arms. Every spring his greenhouse was filled with a sea of seedlings which he shared with many. In later years he had to shut it down in the winter as he was unable to keep up with the work is required. As a result, he had to give all his plants away. He was a member of St. Mary Church, the Algoma Boat Club and enjoyed joining his friends for coffee in the morning at Dairy Deans and afternoon 'Gordy Melchoir' visits with the 'guys'. Frank is survived by his wife, Alice, son Stephen (Maxine) Schmidt, Kewaunee; daughter Laurel (Roland) Marshall, Glencoe, CA; brothers Tom (Maxine) Schmidt, Sturgeon Bay; and David (Mary) Schmidt, Green Bay; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Beatrice Vania and Rita Potcher.Friends may gather at the SCHINDERLE FUNERAL HOME, Algoma, Wed., October 5, 2016 from 9 am until time of Memorial Services at 11 am.
